Top 20 Defense Verdict in California

Daily Journal announces Top 20 Defense Verdicts in California for 2011 – Parnter Edwin Rathbun and Andrew Pongracz were recogonized for their defense verdict in the case of Puckett v. Los Angeles County Sheriff Deputy Jaquez, et al. In a complicated case involving several different allegations of civil rights violations,Ed and Andrew were able to discredit the defense witnesses and thoroughly educate the jurors regarding the facts of the case, ultimately resulting in defense verdicts for all eight deputies.

Defense Jury Verdict

DS v. County of Los Angeles – Lead attorney Andrew Pongracz and partner Ken Watase successfully defended the County of Los Angeles, the Sheriff’s Department and a detective against allegations of excessive use of force and a violation of civil rights. The Plaintiff alleged that she was the victim of excessive force by the detective. Andrew and Ken were able to establish that the physical evidence and medical records did not support the account of the Plaintiff. The Plaintiff was also shown to have credibility issues in the past. After 5 days of trial, the jury returned a defense verdict after deliberating for a few hours.

Directed Verdict

Ortiz v. AT&T – Partner Kenneth Watase and Andrew Pongracz successfully defended AT&T. Plaintiff claimed that she was injured by property she believe was owned by AT&T. After presentation of evidence of in a jury trial, Ken and Andrew made a motion for directed verdict arguing that the Plaintiff had failed to prove that the property belonged to AT&T. Their motion for a directed verdict in favor of the defense was granted by the Judge.

Ramirez v. Deputy Marquez, et al. – Partner Edwin Rathbun and Andrew Pongracz successfully defended seven Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputies who were accused of violating an inmate’s civil rights. After hearing all the evidence in a Federal Court in Los Angeles, a jury returned verdicts in favor of each of the seven deputies. This is Mr. Rathbun’s second Federal defense jury verdict this year.

A Los Angeles Federal jury after hearing all the evidence and after careful deliberations returned verdicts in favor of all the defendants.
